In this paper, we present a new developed state space model of a low pressure discharge lamp used for water treatment (disinfection by ultraviolet radiations). The found non linear model relates the current and the conductivity of the lamp. The used control approach is based on the concept of variable structure systems with sliding mode. Reliable results are given to show the interest of the sliding mode control of complex physical systems
